Shrek 5 confirmed for July 2026 release

Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz will all return for the sequel to the unsympathetic fairy tale Shrek 5, DreamWorks Animation has announced. The film will be released in July 2026.

“Not too far, very far,” DreamWorks Animation wrote on Twitter/X/Muskbook last night (July 9) as it announced the sequel to the fairy tale comedy. Shrek 5 will emerge in 2026.

In all honesty, this is a lie. Space Year 2026 is an incredibly long two years away. By then, we’ll all be flying around in jetpacks and regularly visiting McDonald’s on the Moon, where we’ll eat hamburgers and fries in pill form. Plus, AI will have taken over the planet and none of us will have jobs.

On a more positive note, DreamWorks has confirmed that Mike Myers will return to voice the title’s grumpy green ogre, Eddie Murphy will reprise his role as the talkative donkey, and Cameron Diaz will once again play Princess Fiona.

It’s not yet known whether Antonio Banderas will reprise his CGI sword as Puss in Boots, but given the unexpected (and good) success of 2023, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish it was, it would almost seem strange if he hadn’t.

Rumors of a fifth Shrek film began circulating last April, when DreamWorks Animation creative partner Chris Meledandri (who also happens to be the CEO of Illumination, the studio behind The Super Mario Bros Movie) revealed that the lead actors had expressed “enormous enthusiasm” about reprising their roles in a sequel.

In June, Eddie Murphy informally announced that he had already started recording his lines for the upcoming Shrekand that his character will have his own spin-off film.

“We started making (Shrek 5) five months ago,” he said while promoting another sequel, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. “I did that, I recorded the first act, and we’re doing it this year, we’re finishing it. Shrek is coming out, and Donkey is getting his own movie. We’re going to do Donkey too. So we’re going to do a Shrekand we make a Donkey (movie)”.

By July 1, 2026 – the exact date Shrek 5 will be released – the franchise will also celebrate 25 years. Time is both terrifying and cruel.
