Ellen DeGeneres steps into the spotlight for the last time in Netflix special

Ellen DeGeneres

Intended to catch up with fans by giving them a humorous look at what life has been like since the end of her talk show, Ellen DeGeneres began by telling the audience that she recently “got chickens. Oh yeah, and I got kicked out of show business for being mean.”

In the series, which will eventually debut on Netflix, DeGeneres doubled down and joked that she had always said she didn’t care what others thought of her, and now realizes she only said that “at the peak of my popularity.”

Ellen DeGeneres addressed a 2020 BuzzFeed News report that revealed accusations of an “unhealthy and toxic” atmosphere at the show, made by anonymous current and former employees of the 19-year-old talk show.

Claims against the host ranged from fear of retaliation to unfair punishment for taking medical leave. After the news broke, DeGeneres admitted that she had avoided headlines about herself, noting that the negative publicity about her had been ongoing “for a long time.”
