General Practice Incentive Program in Aged Care (GPACI) – Accreditation and Exemptions for Non-Traditional Practices

Some GPs providing care in care homes operate as sole providers and mobile practices and, until recently, were not eligible for accreditation under the RACGP accreditation standards.

Following consultation, the definition of a general practice has been broadened by the RACGP, providing opportunities for more practices to benefit from improved quality and safety and practice incentive payments.

The RACGP Interpretation Guide for Non-Traditional General Practices for Accreditation Purposes provides general practices and accreditation assessors with information to understand how the RACGP works 5th The publishing standards apply to general practice practices that were not previously eligible for accreditation. The interpretation guide describes how the standards indicators may apply differently or be irrelevant to non-traditional practices and those without physical clinical premises.

While MyMedicare and the Aged Care General Practice Incentive Scheme require a practice to be accredited, an exemption is in place until 30 June 2025. This will allow “non-traditional practices” such as mobile GPs providing essential visiting services to aged care homes to participate in MyMedicare and the Aged Care General Practice Incentive Scheme. Maintaining and improving access to care for residents living in nursing homes is a priority for our region. We encourage non-traditional practices, particularly those providing essential visiting care services to nursing homes, to contact us for information and to explore opportunities to participate in the Aged Care General Practice Accreditation and Incentive Program.
