OFFICIAL: Chelsea appoint former Benfica youth team coach Filipe Coelho as U-21 head coach

For the second year running, Chelsea have hired an outsider to fill the Under-21s’ head coaching position, announcing the arrival of Filipe Coelho today. Coelho replaces Mark Robinson, who left last month to become senior first-team manager at Burton Albion, two years after joining from the AFC Wimbledon youth team.

Coelho, 39, has excellent credentials, having spent more than 15 years coaching in Benfica’s excellent youth system (U12-U19). He left Benfica last year to take up the U23 head coaching position at Estoril, guiding them to the U23 title.

Coelho’s arrival is the first major move in our post-Neil Bath reality. The long-serving academy director left last week, along with his deputy Jim Fraser, in a shock move that has caused some uncertainty around the whole situation. Chelsea are expected to bring in Manchester City EDS head coach Glenn van der Kraan to help run the new set-up, with Joe Shields and Sam Jewell taking over the running of the operation.

They all have high demands and high maintenance standards.

Hello, Filipe!
