Shirt numbers confirmed for 2024/25

It’s a summer of change for Liverpool following the departure of Jurgen Klopp, with potential squad movement also on the horizon.

Arne Slot will begin his first season as Reds manager in 2024/25 and will be counting on players familiar to Anfield fans. Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Alisson are all expected to wear red next season.

However, Liverpool fans will be dreaming of a few additions to a star-studded roster in the summer transfer market, while the standout youngsters who caught the eye last season could get a promotion when it comes to their shirt numbers.

Here are Liverpool’s numbers for the 2024/25 season.

Liverpool have yet to officially confirm their squad numbers for the 2024/25 season, meaning there could be changes before the campaign begins. However, it is unlikely that there will be any major changes in terms of players already at the club.

That being said, it is possible that some of the club’s young academy players could change numbers. Jarell Quansah, Conor Bradley and Stefan Bajcetic could all be eligible for promotion.

Liverpool shouldn’t be too busy in the transfer market ahead of Slot’s first season in charge, but there is always the possibility of new signings. The Reds will surely bring in at least one new face before the window closes.

There are also plenty of numbers available for new arrivals. Thiago’s departure to Anfield and subsequent retirement means that the number six is available, which could be inherited by a new centre-back or defensive midfielder.

All numbers between 12 and 16, 22 to 25 and 27 to 37 are vacant. Adrian’s departure means that the unlucky number 13 is available, while Joel Matip’s departure means that the unorthodox number 32 is also vacant.

Technically, players can wear any number between 1 and 99 in Premier League matches, although unlike in countries such as Turkey and Italy, first-team players usually opt for the lowest number available that matches their position.

There are exceptions, of course. Trent Alexander-Arnold still sports the number 66 shirt he wore when he made his Liverpool first-team debut, while the last two number three starters were not left-backs, with Wataru Endo and Fabinho wearing that number.

Premier League players can change their squad number, but only at specific times during the year. Clubs must confirm their squad number at the start of the season, usually shortly after the transfer window closes.

After this date, players cannot change their number until the end of the January transfer window, and they can only do so if they change clubs or inherit a shirt from someone who has left the club they already play for.
