Meghalaya man dies: Meghalaya man found dead in Assam rehabilitation centre under suspicious circumstances | Guwahati News

Guwahati: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has asked his Assam counterpart Himanta Biswa Sarma to initiate an inquiry into the suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of a Meghalaya resident at a rehabilitation centre located in Assam’s Goalpara district. The Assam Police had detained a Tura resident, Niksamseng Ch Marak, on July 2 for allegedly possessing drugs and later sent him to a rehabilitation centre at Nayapara in Golapara. Two days later, Marak was found dead at the centre. “I am writing to draw your attention to a disturbing incident which requires immediate investigation and action. A resident of my state, (L) Niksamseng Ch Marak, was arrested by the Assam Police on July 2, 2024 and sent to a rehabilitation centre at Goalpara in Assam. However, two days later, he was found dead at a rehabilitation centre — New Life Foundation Centre, Nayapara, Goalpara, under suspicious circumstances,” Conrad wrote in his letter to Sarma. Conrad said in the letter that Marak’s family members had informed that the authorities at the rehabilitation centre initially claimed it was a case of suicide but later changed their statement, “raising serious concerns about the turn of events”. “I was informed that the body bore serious injury marks, including deep stab wounds on the left side of the face, burns, serious injury marks on the chin, hips and legs. These injuries prima facie suggest that (L) Niksamseng was subjected to brutal torture, beatings and stabbings at the rehabilitation centre,” Cornad wrote, urging Sarma to immediately investigate the incident, which he said the family also wanted, so that justice could be done. Marak’s family has filed a complaint about the incident
